I asked him, 'Why is that?' and he said - and the ethics of journalism people would blanch right now when they heard this - but he said, 'Well, the gloves were my idea. I went downtown with Tommie Smith's wife and we bought a pair of gloves. "This was the very start of the movement of black athletes into the mainstream of American sports. Not that it hadn't been going on for many, many years, but it attracted attention to the fact that great black athletes hadn't been getting their due for quite some time. Now, they said, ""
